Understanding Your Electrical Panel or Load Center
Trying to determine if you need a new panelboard or load center may not be a straightforward exercise if you aren’t familiar with the functions of each system. Circuit breakers and fuses prevent overcurrents as energy is being distributed to different circuits. Load centers house circuit breakers for the branch circuits in a property or section of a property. They protect your home should a branch circuit overload or short circuit. An electrical panel also brings circuits into homes, but they are typically larger than the average load center.
According to UL and NEC criteria, load centers are the same as a panelboard or electrical panel. So, while they function similarly, load centers can be helpful during renovation projects where new buildings or structures have electrical systems that need to be joined to an existing residential power grid. The product chosen will come down to the size of the area being powered. Because electrical panels are usually deeper units, they can accommodate various types of circuit breakers, and load centers are limited to plug-in breakers. However, load centers can still operate as the primary panel in many applications. An electrician can help you choose the right product for your electrical system.
Dual function AF/GFCI & Combination AFCI Breakers
Dual function circuit breakers combine class A 5mA GFCI and combination type AFCI to protect your system from arc and ground faults. These units often include self-test options, which provide an additional layer of electrical safety for property owners. Dual function breakers offer combination arc fault and 5mA GFCI safety in a single product. It’s important to note that combination AF/GFCI and dual-function circuit breakers are not the same devices. Combination AFCI breakers provide arc fault protection but do not include ground fault safety defenses.
